What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side.

The idiopathic form of scoliosis (idiopathic means that nobody knows the cause for sure) appears in teenagers, especially girls and stays with them for life.

Diagnosis of Scoliosis
Scoliosis is routinely diagnosed by requesting the person to perform the Adams test (see pictures below). The Adams test is performed by requesting the person to "bend forward and round the back".

The deep squat provides a quick and easy strategy for rebalancing the body and is likely to minimize the risk of onset of idiopathic scoliosis - but it must be done on a regular basis.

Spinal X-rays: Cobb method of determining angle of curvature

  1. Choose the most tilted verterbrae above & below apex of the curve.
  2. Angle between intersecting lines drawn perpendicular to the top of the superior vertebrae and bottom of the inferior vertebrae is the Cobb angle.

In general a Cobb angles greater than 10% is required to make a positive diagnosis and less than 10% is regarded as normal.
